We all have those items that we wish we had but cannot afford in the moment. Sometimes it can be an experience such as, a 2 hour massage or a vacation, but nonetheless, it feels unobtainable in the here and now. Over the years, I’ve discovered a fairly simple way to make my dreams come true in three easy steps without destroying my budget or getting into mounds of debt.
Step 1 – Create a list and spreadsheet. Don’t leave your dreams in your head as “pie in the sky”thoughts. Get organized and concentrate! Create a couple of lists for different categories of items: those that are material in nature, others that are life experiences, etc. Decide which you are ready to save for and which you’ll put on the temporary backburner until a later date.
Step 2 – Put the items you are ready to start pursuing in an active spreadsheet that you will visit at least 3 times a week, if not every day. Put a goal amount next to each item so you can see how close you are to realizing your dream.
Step 3 – As often as possible, throw a bit of money into one of the items. When I say a bit, it could mean 100 dollars, 10 dollars, or just 1 dollar. It could also mean 50 cents! It doesn’t really matter. The important thing is that you are proving to yourself that you are determined to reach that goal and YOU WILL GET THERE. It’s just a matter of time. Pat yourself on the back once you’re 20% of the way there, 30%, and so on. Rather than feel deprived, it can feel good to divert funds into this part of your sheet as you see yourself come closer to your goal. Once you get there, celebrate and enjoy the experience!
It’s that simple! I’ve been using this exercise for years. One year I had an income that was considered at “poverty level” and I still managed to go on 2 trips abroad. Others might chalk it up to luck, but you’ll know the truth. You earned it! Best of luck and make those dreams a reality!
